Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting Moment

Oops, I really fell off the blogging bandwagon.  A whirltrip trip back to the UK did it; between catching up with friends and family, and having limited internet, this blog fell off my radar.

Still, I’m back now, and what better place to kickstart me than with WordPress’ weekly photo challenge.  I’m not much of a street photographer, but I have huge admiration for those who are, and I love the glimpses into other people’s hearts that good street photography captures.  Street photography is one of those wonderful mediums where you realise that as a bunch of indivudals go, we’re often not all so different when it comes right down to it.

As I’m a bit of a wuss myself, I don’t have many appropriate photos or the chance to take any this week, so my submission is a repeat from one I posted about way back in March, in my second only post to this blog.

Don’t Postpone Joy

Then I posted a desaturated version where I left only the red of the raincoats, but I thought it might be more “real” to post the original here.  This was snapped in the Piazzo San Marco, Venice, on total reflex as soon as the splashing pair caught my eye.  I love that no amount of rain was going to stop this couple’s fun in the City of Romance.

The title comes from a friend’s answer to “the meaning of life”, and it’s one of the life lessons I try to hang on no matter what.  Sometimes easier said than done, but everything really worthwhile takes effort, right?

Below is an old photo, from 2006. I’m digging one out from the archives partly because it’s easily my favourite impromptu photo I’ve ever taken, and because old photos are probably going to be the norm here; I am ALWAYS behind on my photos; at time of writing I’m nearly ready to post from photos from October 2011 on Smugmug (where I keep family snap type photos). To be fair, I’d be more ahead if I wasn’t having problems with importing catalogues and photos into Lightroom 3 from another computer but aaaanyway… the point is that me being far behind the times is not unusual.

This image was taken because I try to never put my camera away. I heard splashing behind me, I turned, and this lovely couple ran past me out into the flooded square. Their exuberance and refusal to let a bit of rain (a bit, it had been bucketing gallons since the night before) ruin their day was instantly inspiring, so I raised the camera and SNAP. Personally, I think my lil Fuji Finepix S5500 did a pretty fine job on this one. It was subsequently butchered by hacks (my husband and me) in Photoshop which has blurred it a bit, but it still makes me smile.

I call this “Don’t Postpone Joy”. One day on another blog far far away, I asked the meaning of life. A friend posted the above image in response. It’s been one of my life mottos ever since.
